Gorilla Families and Permits Available in Mgahinga

For travellers looking beyond Bwindi, gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers one of Uganda’s most distinctive primate experiences. Mgahinga lies in southwestern Uganda near Kisoro and forms part of the greater Virunga conservation landscape shared with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Unlike gorilla trekking in Uganda‘s larger Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga currently has one habituated transboundary mountain gorilla group used for tourism: the Nyakagezi gorilla family. With approximately eight visitor permits normally associated with the habituated group per trekking day, Mgahinga offers a much smaller-scale experience and permit availability can therefore disappear quickly on popular dates.
If Mgahinga is your preferred trekking destination, the most important planning step is not simply choosing a lodge or safari itinerary. It is checking your exact trekking date and securing the corresponding Mgahinga gorilla permit before committing to non-refundable travel arrangements.
Mgahinga Gorilla Trekking at a Glance
Which Gorilla Families Are Available in Mgahinga?
The answer is refreshingly simple. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is principally known for the Nyakagezi gorilla family, the park’s habituated mountain gorilla group available for regular tourist trekking. This makes the Mgahinga experience very different from Bwindi, where trekkers are distributed among numerous habituated families in different sectors.
MGAHINGA’S HABITUATED GROUP
The Nyakagezi Gorilla Family
Nyakagezi occupies the Virunga ecosystem and is particularly interesting because of the group’s transboundary history and extensive home range. Trekking this family combines close mountain-gorilla encounters with Mgahinga’s bamboo forests, montane vegetation and dramatic volcanic scenery.
Historically, Nyakagezi was known for moving across the international borders within the Virunga ecosystem. This is why older travel information sometimes describes Mgahinga gorilla permits as unpredictable. Today, the group has been sufficiently established for Mgahinga to operate as a regular Uganda gorilla trekking destination, although wildlife movement can never be treated like a fixed attraction.
For visitors who want a quieter alternative to the more frequently visited Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Nyakagezi is an excellent option to consider.
Mgahinga Gorilla Permit Prices
A gorilla permit is the official authorization required to participate in a gorilla trek. Permits are issued through the Uganda Wildlife Authority and are date-specific.
Safari Vacations & Travel Services can check availability, reserve available permits and integrate them into your complete Uganda safari itinerary.

Important: Permit tariffs and eligibility conditions can change. Always reconfirm the applicable rate and actual availability for your travel date before making irreversible travel arrangements.
How Many Gorilla Permits Are Available in Mgahinga Each Day?
Uganda Wildlife Authority describes Mgahinga as issuing about eight gorilla permits per day. This reflects the limited visitor numbers associated with its habituated gorilla group and is one of the reasons the experience can feel particularly intimate.
Permit availability is not the same as daily permit capacity.
Eight potential trekking spaces do not mean eight permits will still be available when you enquire. Existing bookings may have taken some or all of the spaces. Availability must therefore be checked for the traveller’s exact date.
This is particularly important during the main Uganda safari seasons of June to September and December to February. Travellers planning around Christmas, New Year, July/August holidays or fixed international flights should ideally secure their permits well in advance.

The easiest approach is to have your permit arranged as part of your Uganda safari. Safari Vacations & Travel Services can coordinate permit availability with your transport, accommodation and arrival route.

What Is Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga Like?
Mgahinga offers a visually distinctive gorilla trek. The park occupies the Ugandan slopes of the Virunga volcanoes and ranges from approximately 2,227 metres to 4,127 metres in altitude. Forest, bamboo zones and volcanic terrain create a different atmosphere from Bwindi’s extensive rainforest.

On trekking morning, visitors report to the park headquarters for registration and a ranger briefing. Once groups are organized, experienced trackers and ranger guides lead trekkers into the forest following signs of the gorillas’ movements.
The amount of walking varies because gorillas are wild and move naturally through their habitat. Trekking may take several hours depending on the family’s location, weather and terrain. Once the gorillas are located, standard tracking normally provides a maximum of one hour in their presence.
That hour is the heart of the experience: observing feeding, grooming, resting, juveniles playing and the social relationships within a mountain gorilla family at remarkably close range while following the ranger’s instructions.
Why Choose Mgahinga for Gorilla Trekking?
Small-Scale Experience
With one habituated group and limited daily trekking spaces, Mgahinga appeals to travellers looking for a more intimate park atmosphere.
Virunga Scenery
The volcanic setting creates superb mountain views and a striking backdrop for the overall safari experience.
Golden Monkeys
Combine gorilla trekking with another Virunga specialty: endangered golden monkeys inhabiting Mgahinga’s bamboo forest.
Easy Kigali Combination
Mgahinga can fit conveniently into itineraries beginning or ending in Kigali, subject to border and visa requirements.

ADD ANOTHER VIRUNGA PRIMATE
Combine Gorillas with Golden Monkey Trekking
Mgahinga is not only about mountain gorillas. It is also one of Uganda’s key destinations for the endangered golden monkey. Their energetic movement through bamboo forest creates a very different primate experience from gorilla trekking.
A well-designed Mgahinga itinerary can therefore include one day with the Nyakagezi gorilla family and another day tracking golden monkeys.
Mgahinga vs Bwindi Gorilla Trekking
Both parks protect mountain gorillas and both can deliver extraordinary encounters. The better destination depends on permit availability, itinerary routing and the type of landscape you want to experience.
| Factor | Mgahinga | Bwindi |
|---|---|---|
| Habituated families | One principal tourism group | Multiple families across several sectors |
| Daily permit choice | Very limited | Greater overall capacity |
| Landscape | Virunga volcanoes, bamboo and montane forest | Ancient dense rainforest and steep valleys |
| Extra primate option | Golden monkeys | Forest primates and, in Rushaga, gorilla habituation opportunities |
Travellers with flexible dates can ask us to compare Uganda gorilla trekking availability in both parks before deciding.
How to Get to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
From Entebbe or Kampala
Travelling overland to Kisoro is a long but scenic journey through southwestern Uganda. For travellers with limited time, scheduled or charter flights to Kisoro can substantially reduce travel time.
Flying to Kisoro
Domestic flights can connect Entebbe with Kisoro, after which a road transfer continues to your lodge near Mgahinga. Weather and baggage restrictions should be considered when planning flights.
From Kigali, Rwanda
Kigali is a practical international gateway for southwestern Uganda. The route crosses into Uganda before continuing toward Kisoro and Mgahinga, making it useful for short gorilla safaris.
Add Lake Mutanda to Your Mgahinga Safari
Lake Mutanda is one of the most attractive additions to a Kisoro and Mgahinga itinerary. Its island-dotted waters and volcanic backdrop make it an excellent place to slow down before or after a demanding gorilla trek.
Depending on your itinerary, a stay around Kisoro or Lake Mutanda can also provide a useful buffer between your arrival day and the morning of your gorilla trek.

Where to Stay for Mgahinga Gorilla Trekking
Accommodation can be arranged around the park, Kisoro and Lake Mutanda. The right choice depends on budget, comfort expectations and how early you want to reach the park headquarters on trekking morning.
What to Bring for a Mgahinga Gorilla Trek
Mountain weather can change quickly, and trails can become wet or muddy. Come prepared rather than relying on the forecast alone.
Hiring a local porter is also highly recommended. A porter can help carry your daypack and provide support on difficult or slippery sections of trail while directly creating local employment.
Best Time to Trek the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family
Gorilla trekking operates throughout the year. The drier periods, broadly June to September and December to February, are popular because trails may be easier to negotiate. These months also attract stronger demand, so early permit booking becomes especially important.
The wetter months can still be excellent for gorilla trekking. Mgahinga remains beautifully green, visitor numbers can feel lower, and photographers may appreciate the atmospheric forest conditions. Rain, however, can make sections of the trail muddy and more physically demanding.
Because Mgahinga has limited daily permit capacity, choosing your date based only on weather is not always practical. We recommend checking permit availability first, particularly if your international flights are already fixed.
Mgahinga Gorilla Safari Ideas
Mgahinga can work as a short standalone gorilla trip or as part of a longer Uganda and Rwanda safari.
