Gorilla Trekking from USA

Watch the gorilla trekking experience and imagine your own journey from the USA to East Africa.
Plan a Gorilla Trekking Safari from the United States
Gorilla trekking from the USA is easier to organize with a trusted local safari team. Whether you depart from New York, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco or another U.S. city, Safari Vacations & Travel Services can plan your ground arrangements in Uganda or Rwanda from your arrival until your departure. We tailor private trips for couples, families with travelers aged 15 and above, friends, solo guests, and photographers.
You can fly into Entebbe International Airport (EBB) for a Uganda safari or Kigali International Airport (KGL) for Rwanda or a shorter road transfer into southwestern Uganda. Most U.S. itineraries involve at least one international connection, and flight routes and schedules depend on your departure airport and dates. Share your flight details before confirming your land transfers.
Uganda or Rwanda: Which Is Better from the USA?
| Factor | Uganda | Rwanda |
|---|---|---|
| Where to trek | Bwindi or Mgahinga | Volcanoes National Park |
| Standard permit | USD 800 per foreign non-resident | USD 1,500 per foreign visitor |
| Typical arrival airport | Entebbe or Kigali (cross-border) | Kigali |
| Best suited to | Value, longer wildlife trips and chimpanzees | Shorter luxury escapes and compact routing |
| Travel to trekking area | Entebbe–Bwindi often 8–9 hours by road, or domestic flights plus transfer | Kigali–Musanze about 2–3 hours by road |
Uganda also offers certain April, May and November permits at USD 600 for eligible foreign non-residents; discounted permits cannot be rescheduled. Costs and availability must be reconfirmed before payment. Many guests choose Uganda for a multi-park safari and Rwanda for a shorter premium experience.

Arrive in Kigali, cross into Uganda, trek gorillas in Bwindi and return to Kigali. Ideal when time is limited.
5–7 Days — Gorillas & Wildlife
Combine Bwindi with Queen Elizabeth National Park, game drives and a Kazinga Channel boat cruise; add chimpanzees when time allows.
10–14 Days — Uganda or Uganda & Rwanda
Explore gorillas, Kibale chimpanzees, wildlife parks, local culture and optionally Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park.
Suggested 7-Day Uganda Gorilla Safari from the USA
This example starts and ends in Entebbe, and is designed for travelers who want more than a single gorilla trek.

Trekking dates, park sectors and domestic flight connections are arranged around permit availability. For more relaxed international connections, add a final night in Entebbe.
How Much Does Gorilla Trekking from the USA Cost?
The cost has two distinct parts: round-trip international airfare from the USA and your East Africa safari package. Flight prices change by departure city, airline, season and booking date, so international flights are normally quoted separately.
- Uganda gorilla permit: USD 800 per person at the standard foreign non-resident rate; eligible low-season permits may be USD 600.
- Rwanda gorilla permit: USD 1,500 per foreign visitor.
- Ground safari: depends on trip length, lodge category, whether you travel solo or share costs, domestic flights, and additional activities.
- Other travel costs: U.S.–Africa airfare, visas, tips, travel insurance, optional porters and personal expenses.
Rather than advertise a misleading one-price-fits-all figure, we quote a fully itemized safari according to your travel dates, group size and accommodation preferences. Ask for midrange, luxury or high-end accommodation options within the same itinerary.
Planning for 2027? The standard Uganda gorilla trekking permit remains USD 800 under the currently reported tariff; gorilla habituation is scheduled to increase to USD 1,800 for foreign non-residents from January 2027. All permit tariffs should be reconfirmed at booking.
Flights from the USA to Uganda or Rwanda
There are several international one-stop or multi-stop options depending on the city and travel dates. Popular connection hubs may include Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, Addis Ababa and European hubs. Compare arrival times, layover durations, luggage allowances and whether a ticket uses multiple airlines. For Uganda, book flights into Entebbe (EBB); for Rwanda or a Uganda gorilla trek starting in Kigali, book into Kigali (KGL). Please confirm your safari itinerary and permit dates before purchasing nonrefundable international flights.
If you would rather avoid a full-day drive from Entebbe to southwestern Uganda, we can explore scheduled domestic flights to Kihihi or Kisoro followed by road transfer. Small-aircraft baggage restrictions apply, and schedules are subject to confirmation.
Visas, Passport Rules and Health Advice for Americans
Uganda Entry
U.S. travelers generally need a visa. Apply through the official Uganda immigration e-visa portal before travel. Your passport should be valid for at least six months; check current document requirements before applying.
Rwanda Entry
U.S. citizens can obtain a tourist visa on arrival in Rwanda; a typical 30-day single-entry tourist visa costs USD 50. Confirm current entry rules with Rwanda Immigration.
Health & Insurance
Uganda announced on 2 October 2026 that a yellow fever certificate is no longer mandatory for entry. Medical vaccination recommendations can still differ from entry rules. Consult a travel clinician about vaccinations, malaria prevention, medications and comprehensive evacuation insurance.
Consult current U.S. State Department travel advisories and destination immigration authorities shortly before departure. Border and transit requirements depend on your actual routing.
When Is the Best Time for Americans to Go Gorilla Trekking?
Gorillas can be trekked year-round. June–September and December–February are popular because trail conditions are often relatively drier, although rain remains possible in the rainforest. March–May and October–November can be wetter and muddier, but forests are lush and some travel periods offer better lodge rates. April, May and November may also qualify for special Uganda permit rates. Book early for U.S. summer vacation dates and the Christmas–New Year season.
What to Expect on Gorilla Trekking Day
Meet park rangers for a morning briefing, then follow professional trackers through forest trails in search of a habituated gorilla group. The hike can take approximately one to six hours, depending on the gorillas’ location, terrain and conditions. Once your group reaches the gorillas, standard trekking permits allow one hour of observation. The minimum trekking age is 15 years.
Bring sturdy hiking boots, a lightweight rain jacket, long pants, gardening-style gloves, sun protection and drinking water. A porter can help with your daypack and difficult ground, and hiring one also provides local employment. Do not trek when ill; follow ranger guidance, avoid touching wildlife, and maintain the prescribed viewing distance.
