The Nkuringo Gorilla Family

The Nkuringo gorilla family earned their name from their original leader, Silverback Nkuringo, which signifies “round hill”. The successful habituation of this family concluded in 2004. Regrettably, Nkuringo passed away four years later, leaving behind two sons, Rafiki (which translates to “friend” in Swahili) and Safari.

Upon his father’s passing, Rafiki assumed the role of leader within the family. He was known for his gentle wisdom and commanded respect from all members of the group. Tragically, Rafiki fell victim to poachers in 2020.

Presently, Safari stands as the head of the Nkuringo gorilla family. He exhibits great strength and capability in his leadership, displaying a resolute determination to safeguard his family.

The Nkuringo gorilla family is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Visitors can trek through the rainforest to see these gentle giants in their natural habitat.

Safari book up the leadership of the family and has been able to strongly hold all the members together through good times and bad seasons.

Seven months into the safari era, this family joyfully welcomed healthy baby twins, whom they named Katungi and Muhoozi. Sadly, Katungi passed away before reaching his second birthday. Currently, the family consists of nine members, with a dominant black-back male leading the group due to his distinctive black back.

Bushaho Gorilla Family

The Bushaho Gorilla Family is another Gorilla group for Gorilla tracking in the Nkuringo sector. This family has 11 family members and this has increased Nkuringo Gorilla tracking permits. Before the coming of the Christmas Gorilla family, there were 16 permits but after the introduction of the family, now 24 Gorilla permits are available daily.

Nkuringo Gorilla family stays in one of the most challenging Gorilla tracking sectors in the whole of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park but when you finally come to the pathway, it is the most rewarding experience of all time.

These permits are purchased at the Uganda Wildlife Authority offices and booked on a first-come, first-serve basis. Christmas Gorilla family

The Christmas Gorilla family in Nkuringo has 7 members headed by one silverback called Christmas one blackback, 4 females, and one baby. The introduction of this group has led to an increase in the number of Gorilla permits available for Gorilla tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.
