Rwanda Gorilla tracking

Gorillas in Rwanda are one of Africa’s greatest treasures. Rwanda is a small East African country with a big heart for wildlife. It has built a strong economy using local resources and smart strategies. Tourism plays a huge role in this growth. In 2018, tourism brought in US$14 billion and created over 100,000 jobs for local people. At the center of this success sits mountain gorilla trekking. Travelers from all over the world visit Rwanda just to see these gentle giants. The gorilla experience is truly like no other on earth.

Why Rwanda is Famous for Gorillas

Rwanda has earned its place as a top gorilla trekking destination. In fact, the country raised its gorilla permit price to reflect the quality of the experience it offers. Beyond that, this move also helped protect the gorillas and boosted the country’s income. Today, Rwanda welcomes millions of tourists every year. Notably, most of them come with one goal — to see mountain gorillas in the wild. Without a doubt, the thrill of standing near these great apes in their natural home is something travelers never forget.

Similarly, the story of gorilla conservation in Rwanda is deeply inspiring. To begin with, an American naturalist named Dr. Dian Fossey first studied these animals in the Virunga mountain ranges. Over time, she spent over 16 years learning about their behavior and how they relate to humans. As a result, her work helped save gorillas from extinction. In addition, she also brought their plight to the attention of people around the world. Eventually, her research appeared in several articles and inspired a popular movie called Gorillas in the Mist. Consequently, that film helped spark global interest in gorilla conservation and tourism.

Where to Track Gorillas in Rwanda

Travelers trek gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. This park sits in the northwest of Rwanda and is one of the oldest parks in all of Africa. Officials set it up in 1925 with a clear purpose — to protect gorillas from poachers. Today, the park shelters over 400 mountain gorillas. That number represents nearly half of all mountain gorillas left on earth. The park currently has 10 habituated gorilla families, meaning these gorilla groups have grown used to human presence.

Mountain gorillas appear on the IUCN Red List as an endangered species. This status means they need strong protection at all times. Rangers and conservationists work hard every day to keep them safe. Despite this, all 10 habituated gorilla families in Rwanda are open to visitors throughout the year. Each family receives just eight visitors per day. Trekkers spend one full hour with the gorillas once they find the group. During that hour, rangers answer questions, share insights about gorilla behavior, and allow plenty of time for photos. It is a rich and deeply personal experience.

Rules and Regulations for Gorillas  trekking in Rwanda

Rwanda takes gorilla safety very seriously. Every trekker must follow a clear set of rules. These rules protect both the gorillas and the visitors. Breaking any rule can put everyone at risk.

First, always follow your guide’s instructions. Guides work with the gorillas every day and know them well. Stay in a quiet, compact group at all times. Walk behind the guide and let the dominant male gorilla see the group clearly.

Second, if a silverback approaches or charges, do not step back. Stand completely still. Look down at the ground. Crouch slightly to show a calm, non-threatening posture. Never make sudden movements or loud noises near the gorillas.

Third, if a young gorilla comes close, do not try to touch it. The guide will manage the situation. Touching a young gorilla can anger the silverback and put everyone in danger.

Additionally, never stare directly at a gorilla. If one stares at you, look away or down. Never use a camera flash when taking photos. The bright light startles the gorillas and can trigger a reaction.

Only healthy visitors may trek gorillas. Gorillas catch human diseases easily, especially colds and chest infections. Any visitor with signs of illness must stay behind. All trekkers must also be physically fit. The terrain in Volcanoes National Park is steep and demanding. Trekkers must be ready to walk for several hours over rough ground.

Children under 15 years of age cannot join gorilla treks. This rule applies everywhere gorilla trekking takes place. Smoking, eating, and drinking are strictly forbidden within 200 meters of a gorilla group. Trekkers must carry all their litter out of the park and leave nothing behind. No one should damage vegetation or light fires inside the park.

The Best Time to Trek Gorillas in Rwanda

Rwanda has two wet seasons and two dry seasons. The short wet season runs from October to November. The long wet season stretches from mid-March to June. During the dry seasons, trails are easier to walk and conditions are more pleasant. However, gorilla trekking takes place all year round. Gorillas are always present in the park, rain or shine. Some trekkers even enjoy the wet season because the forest looks lush and green.

The Cost of a kim Gorilla Permit in Rwanda

A gorilla permit in Rwanda costs $1,500 per person per trek. As a result, Rwanda stands as one of the most premium gorilla trekking destinations in the world. Importantly, the high permit price serves two key purposes. First, it raises money for conservation. Second, it helps grow Rwanda’s economy. Furthermore, when travelers buy a permit, they support the rangers, the local communities, and the park itself. In other words, every dollar goes directly toward keeping these magnificent animals safe.

Fortunately, visitors can get permits in two ways. The first option is to book through a trusted local tour operator. Simply send your travel dates and the operator handles the rest. Once they secure the permit, they then send you proof of payment right away. Alternatively, the second option is to book directly with the Rwanda Development Board via email. However, this process takes considerably longer to complete. For this reason, using a trusted local operator is strongly recommended.
