Where to see Mountain gorillas in Uganda
Mountain gorillas largely live in the mountainous areas of western Uganda mainly in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga gorilla national park.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park which endured the ancient ice age, harbors the world’s largest recorded population of mountain gorillas. This 321sq. km national park accommodates 18 habituated mountain gorilla families spread across four gorilla tracking regions: Buhoma in the northern area, Ruhija in the eastern region, Rushaga in the lower south, and Nkuringo in the upper south. All these habituated mountain gorilla families are accessible to tourist visitors, with a maximum of eight people permitted to trek the gorillas each day.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Nestled at the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers a unique experience. Here, tourists have the opportunity to track one gorilla family. Despite its relatively small size, covering just 34 km, this park holds significant ecological importance. Furthermore, it serves as a crucial habitat for the endangered golden monkeys.
Best time for Gorilla tracking in Uganda
Gorilla tracking in Uganda is an all-year activity but Uganda’s four climatic conditions do affect the experience most especially during the rainy seasons of March, April, and May and September, October, and November but the dry seasons are from June, July, and August, and then December, January, and February and this doubles as the best time to trek the gorillas as the trails are dry.
