2-Day Nyiragongo Hiking Tour

The 2-Day Nyiragongo Hiking Tour takes you deep into Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Here, you will stand at the rim of one of the world’s most active volcanoes. You will watch a massive, glowing lava lake boil far below your feet. Very few volcanoes in the world allow tourists to do this. Africa has only one — Mount Nyiragongo. This tour runs for two days and starts from either Goma in Congo or Gisenyi in Rwanda. It is a raw, unforgettable adventure that stays with you long after you return home.
About Virunga National Park
Virunga National Park sits in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is one of Africa’s most famous and oldest national parks. In fact, it holds the title of the oldest national park on the entire continent. The park covers a wide range of landscapes. These include thick rainforests, open savanna grasslands, rivers, lakes, and three active volcanoes.
Furthermore, Virunga is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It shelters some of Africa’s rarest animals. Among them are the endangered mountain gorilla, the rare okapi, and the bongo antelope. In earlier times, the park was even larger. It once joined Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda as one big protected area.
Today, the park draws visitors from around the world. The two biggest attractions are hiking Mount Nyiragongo and gorilla trekking. Together, these two activities make Virunga one of the top wildlife destinations in Africa.
About Mount Nyiragongo
Mount Nyiragongo stands 3,470 meters tall. It forms part of the Virunga chain of eight volcanoes. The other volcanoes in this chain include Mikeno, Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhavura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo. Nyiragongo, however, is the most visited of them all.
The volcano is also one of the most active in the entire world. Its crater stretches about 2 kilometers wide. Inside, a large lava lake churns and glows with intense heat. Scientists and volcanologists study it closely because it gives rare insight into how the Earth works deep below the surface.
Over the years, Nyiragongo has erupted more than 30 times. The most notable eruptions took place in 1882, 1977, 1994, and 2002. The 2002 eruption was especially destructive. Lava flowed at tremendous speed and reached Lake Kivu and the town of Goma in just minutes. It displaced thousands of people, destroyed homes, and caused many deaths. During that eruption, the lava lake briefly emptied. However, it refilled within a few weeks.
Despite its active history, Mount Nyiragongo is currently calm and safe for hiking. Park rangers and guides monitor the volcano closely and keep all visitors safe throughout the climb.
What Makes the 2-Day Nyiragongo Hiking Tour Special
Most active volcanoes in the world are off-limits to tourists. Scientists visit them only under tight safety controls. Nyiragongo is different. It is the only active volcano in Africa where tourists can walk to the summit and observe a live, boiling lava lake up close.
Moreover, you do not just look and leave. You actually spend the night at the summit, sleeping in a cabin built right on the crater rim. You watch the lava glow and shift through the night. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that very few places on Earth can offer.
In addition, this tour pairs well with gorilla trekking in Virunga. If you have more time, consider our 5-day Mount Nyiragongo Hike and Gorilla Trekking Package. It combines the volcano experience with a chance to see mountain gorillas in the wild.
Day 1: Travel to Kibati and Begin the Nyiragongo Hike
Your driver picks you up at 7:00 am. Pickup is from Gisenyi in Rwanda or from Goma town in Congo. By 8:00 am, you arrive at the briefing point in Kibati. This gathering point is close to the Congo-Rwanda border crossing, making it easy to access from either side.
Registration and Porter Arrangements
At Kibati, the rangers register all hikers and hand out Nyiragongo permits. This is also the right time to hire a personal porter. A porter helps carry your gear and costs between 10 and 15 US dollars in cash. Hiring one is a smart choice, especially for those who are not used to long mountain hikes.
Hiking to the Summit
The hike to the summit takes between 3 and 6 hours. However, the exact time depends on how fit and fast your group is. By 5:00 pm, most hikers reach the top. Along the way, the trail divides into four major sections. As you continue climbing higher, each section becomes steeper and more challenging. Nevertheless, this is normal and expected on any volcano hike.
Group Hiking Rules on the Trail
For the first three sections, the entire group moves together. No one gets left behind. If a hiker slows down, the group waits. Only after the third section do faster hikers move ahead. By that point, the distance remaining is short. Any hiker still behind is expected to catch up on their own.
Scenic Views and Volcanic Landscape
As you climb, you pass through remarkable scenery. The lava soils are dark and striking. Unique plants grow on the volcano’s slopes, shaped by years of volcanic activity. The air gets cooler, and the views grow wider as you rise above the surrounding landscape.
Spending the Night at the Summit
Once you reach the summit, a guide shows you to your cabin. The cabins sit on the crater rim, right above the lava lake. Inside, each cabin has a bed, a mattress, and warm bedsheets. However, we strongly recommend bringing your own sleeping bag. Since nights at the summit are cold, the extra warmth makes a big difference.
After settling in, your guide then takes you to a safe viewing point. From there, you look directly down into the crater. Below, the lava lake glows in deep shades of red and orange. At the same time, it churns and shifts, sending bursts of fire and heat into the air. Meanwhile, thick columns of smoke rise against the dark sky.
During the day, the smoke and fire are already impressive. But at night, the spectacle becomes truly extraordinary. The glow of the molten lava lights up the crater in a way that is hard to describe. Many visitors say it is the most powerful natural sight they have ever seen. You can stay at the viewing point for as long as you wish. Most people find it very hard to leave.
Day 2: Breakfast at the Summit and Descent
Wake up early on day two. By 5:30 am, breakfast is ready at the summit. You eat while watching the lava lake in the early morning light. It is a moment you will not forget.
At 6:30 am, the descent begins. Going down is much easier than climbing up. The descent takes between 2 and 3 hours. The trail is the same one you used to climb, but it feels very different on the way down. You move faster and with less effort.
As you descend, take time to look around. The vegetation on the slopes is lush and varied. The dark lava soils contrast sharply with the green plants. On the horizon, the other Virunga volcanoes rise into the sky. The views are wide and peaceful.
From a clear vantage point, you can also see the vast expanse of Virunga National Park below. Further in the distance, you can spot Kahuzi Biega National Park, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and Mgahinga National Park in Uganda. Lake Kivu shimmers in the light, stretching wide and blue between Congo and Rwanda.
Return to Goma or Kigali after your 2-Day Nyiragongo Hiking Tour
By mid-morning, you reach the Kibati Patrol Post at the base of the mountain. Your driver is already waiting. From there, you transfer back to Goma, Gisenyi, or Kigali, depending on your travel plans.
If time allows, your driver can take you on a brief tour of Goma town. The town sits close to the Rwandan border and has an interesting character shaped by its volcanic and colonial history. It is a lively place worth seeing before you leave.
