Why do silverback gorillas fight?
How do Gorillas fight?, Gorillas are close relatives to human beings as they scientifically share 90% of DNA with humans and have different body parts that closely look like those of humans.
Gorillas exhibit fascinating behaviors and demonstrate a notable level of intelligence, particularly in the tropical rainforests of East and Central Africa. Unfortunately, they are classified as endangered due to habitat loss. They typically reside in groups, commonly led by male gorillas known as silverbacks. These silverbacks acquire their name from the silver coloration that develops on their backs as they reach maturity.
Silverbacks gorillas hardly fight but when they fight, it is indeed severe and intense. gorillas are gentle and try as much as possible not to get into conflicts or fights.
When displeased or in an unhappy mood, gorillas demonstrate their dissatisfaction by beating their chests, signaling their strength, and issuing a warning not to interfere or disturb them. Additionally, when frightened, they display additional teeth. Most gorillas perform forceful chest beating and stamp their feet on the ground when they charge, marking the initial phase of a potential gorilla confrontation. If you observe such behavior up close, it is advised to remain calm to preserve a peaceful environment.
Silverback gorillas fight using teeth, hands, and legs.
Their canine teeth are so sharp that they easily penetrate the flesh of another gorilla or any other animaanimallved in the fight. Some of the reasons for gorilla fights include;
To protect the group/family from intruders and enemies.
Silverbacks fight when they meet with another gorilla group. Silverbacks of each group will show their energy to each other and when they start fighting, they will use their teeth to injure the other which may lead to severe bleeding and may result in death. They fight enemies approaching their groups for protection.
To break off from the main group start another group with some members from the group.
Since there is only one leading silverback, the rest of the males are not allowed to make decisions and to make with the group females and when they mature, they want to go and make their groups. So they eventually fight before taking some members of the group to start their own.
Gorilla fights are not common because they are gentle and are peace-loving, but can be aggressive where it is necessary.
