Ssezibwa Falls In Uganda – Activities and History
Ssezibwa Falls
The Ssezibwa Falls In Uganda is located 32 kilometers away from Kampala city along the main road between Kampala and Jinja in the District of Mukono. The falls are a result of water squeezing through a narrow opening in rocks, dropping at great speed (17 meters) into a large pool that is about 14 meters deep. This area offers an ideal spot for relaxation after a wildlife safari in Uganda or before heading to the source of the Nile river for activities like Whitewater rafting or bungee jumping. The name “Ssezibwa” is a local term referring to something “endless.” Additionally, the falls hold significant cultural and spiritual importance for the Baganda people and are considered one of the top attractions in Uganda. The site is under the administration of the Buganda culture and tourism department.
The falls are characterized by several rocks with sharp edges and a large pool below. The river Ssezibwa flows from the falls all the way to Lake Kyoga. The surrounding area is home to small primates like Vervet and red-tailed monkeys, as well as snakes like the African cobra, green mambas, and horned adder. Other animals in the vicinity include otters, tadpoles, mongooses, and wild cats.
In addition to its natural beauty, Ssezibwa Falls hold great cultural significance for Buganda’s history and beliefs. According to a Buganda legend, a woman named Nakangu Tebatuusa gave birth to twins in the form of water after a dispute with her husband Nsubuga Sebwaata. Bwanda and Sezibwa, the two resulting rivers, followed different courses.
Bwanda flowed towards the East to Nyenga, while Sezibwa flowed towards the west, encountering many obstacles. With the help of a spirit named Nalongo Nnkubo, Sezibwa overcame these obstacles. This legend has contributed to the reverence and rituals associated with the falls. Twins are highly valued in Buganda, and their birth is considered a special blessing, with rituals performed to appease the gods. Ssezibwa Falls In Uganda
Over the years, Buganda Kings (Kabakas) visited this place to seek blessings and good health. Kabaka Mwanga planted a wild olive tree known as the Mwanga tree during a journey between his palaces in 1889. This tree, now over 100 years old, stands as a testament to the natural beauty of the falls. Later, King Muteesa II and King Ronald Mwenda Mutebi II also planted trees as marks of respect for the spiritual importance of the falls.
Apart from royal visitors, people from all over Uganda still come to the falls seeking blessings for health, jobs, children, businesses, and families. Traditional healers invoke the gods or use local herbs to cure various ailments. Sacrifices, including coffee beans, eggs, local beer, and animals like sheep and goats, are offered to win favor with the gods. These offerings are made at the top of the falls, and it’s not uncommon to find remnants at the foot of the falls.
Although these cultural practices continue, it’s worth noting that the Anglican Church owns land close to the waterfalls. Christians come for retreats and baptism services are performed in the same waters.
How to reach Ssezibwa Falls?
To reach the falls from Kampala, travel about 30km. Once you join the junction heading to the falls, the road is rough, especially during the rainy season, so a good 4 Wheel Drive Car is recommended. Drive slowly and remain observant not to miss the main junction leading to the falls. There’s a signpost showing the direction to the Ssezibwa River Resort, but it’s easy to overlook.
The facility’s main gate, constructed from reeds, leads to a beautiful scenery with the gentle sounds of the waterfalls. The area is full of trees and relatively unspoiled. Further inside, you’ll not only find the falls but also a bridge under which the river flows downstream. The bridge offers arguably the best spot to view the falls and take photos. Across the bridge, you’ll find rocks and more trees on well-manicured grass, creating a great atmosphere for relaxation.
