How Many Chimpanzee Permits are Available Daily in Kibale NP?

Primate Safaris in Rwanda During the Low Season: Rwanda opens its arms to primate enthusiasts every single month of the year. Whether you dream of locking eyes with a mountain gorilla, tracking chimpanzees through a cathedral-like rainforest, or chasing golden monkeys across misty bamboo slopes, this small and extraordinary country delivers. At Safari Vacations and Travel Services, we believe the low season — March, April, May, and November — is not a compromise. It is, in fact, one of the most rewarding times to go.

The Hidden Advantages of Traveling Off-Peak

Fewer visitors travel to Rwanda during these months, and that works powerfully in your favor. You step into the forest with fewer crowds, secure permits more easily, and often enjoy discounted rates from lodges and operators eager to fill their calendars. The Rwanda Development Board may also lower gorilla trekking permit prices to $1,050 during the low season — though we always recommend confirming this in advance, as it is not guaranteed.

Yes, the rains come. The forest floors grow muddy, and the trails become slippery underfoot. But here is what the rain also does: it saturates the canopy, deepens the greens, and fills the air with the earthy perfume of the jungle. The primates do not disappear. They are always there. And the dramatic, rain-drenched backdrop makes for some of the most atmospheric wildlife photography of your life.

Volcanoes National Park: Rwanda’s Crown Jewel

Volcanoes National Park anchors the northwestern corner of Rwanda and stands as the country’s most iconic primate destination. Five dramatic volcanoes — Gahinga, Bisoke, Muhavura, Sabyinyo, and Karisimbi — shape the rugged landscape, and within those steep, forested slopes live some of the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas.

Each trekking day begins with a ranger briefing, after which guides assign groups to one of approximately 12 habituated gorilla families. Well-known groups include Karisimbi, Amahoro, Umubano, Agashya, Hirwa, and Muhoza. Your team then sets off along forest trails toward where rangers last spotted the family. Once you find them, you receive exactly one hour in their presence — a firm rule designed to protect these magnificent animals from unnecessary human contact.

Prepare your body for the challenge. The terrain rises sharply, and the altitude demands real effort. Bring sturdy waterproof boots, trekking poles, and a willingness to push through mud and mist. The reward, however, is beyond language. Sitting meters away from a silverback as he surveys his family through calm, intelligent eyes is a moment that stays with you for the rest of your life.

Beyond gorillas, Volcanoes National Park also offers golden monkey trekking — an experience that surprises nearly every visitor with its raw energy. Unlike most wildlife encounters, this trek demands speed, sharp reflexes, and constant movement. Golden monkeys dart through bamboo thickets, launch between branches, and change direction without a moment’s warning. Rangers habituate them beforehand, yet these spirited primates never fully settle. Every minute feels alive and unpredictable. Permits for international non-residents cost $100 — an exceptional value for such a thrilling encounter. Book early to secure your spot.

Nyungwe National Park: Chimpanzees and the Canopy Walk

Travel southwest to the shores of Lake Kivu and you reach Nyungwe National Park, Rwanda’s premier destination for chimpanzee trekking. Rangers run two sessions daily — one in the morning and one in the afternoon — giving you genuine flexibility. After a briefing at the ranger station, guides lead your group along established trails through one of Africa’s oldest and most biodiverse rainforests. Along the way, keep your eyes open for blue monkeys, olive baboons, red-tailed monkeys, and the grey-cheeked mangabey.

Nyungwe also offers one of East Africa’s most exhilarating non-wildlife activities: the canopy walk. This 160-meter suspension bridge hangs roughly 70 meters above the forest floor. The view stretches endlessly across ancient treetops, and the feeling of swaying gently above the canopy is something entirely its own. If you have any appetite for heights, do not miss it.

Permit Costs at a Glance

Gorilla Trekking: International non-residents $1,500 | International residents & African nationals $500 | East Africans $200

Chimpanzee Trekking: International non-residents $250 | Foreign residents $75 | East Africans $25

Golden Monkey Trekking: International non-residents $100 | International residents $65

Our team at Safari Vacations and Travel Services handles all permit bookings on your behalf. Contact us early — even during the low season, last-minute requests can fall short, and we want your itinerary locked in well ahead of your departure date.

Beyond the Forests: More to Discover

Rwanda rewards travelers who look beyond its primate parks. Akagera National Park, the country’s only savanna game reserve, welcomes visitors year-round with classic Big Five game drives. Lions, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, and buffalo roam freely across this beautiful landscape. Boat trips on Lake Ihema bring you up close to hippos and crocodiles while birds wheel and call overhead.

Birding enthusiasts thrive in Rwanda throughout the year. Volcanoes Forest, Nyungwe Forest, and Akagera all deliver sightings of rare Albertine Rift endemics, including Shelley’s Crimsonwing, the Rwenzori Turaco, and the Handsome Francolin. Finally, a Kigali city tour rounds out any Rwanda journey beautifully. The capital is clean, safe, and impressively modern, with outstanding coffee, excellent local restaurants, and the fascinating Ethnographic Museum in Huye, which preserves traditional Rwandese culture and heritage.

What to Pack for the Low Season

Smart packing makes the difference between a good trip and a great one. Bring a quality rain jacket, waterproof boots, garden gloves for gripping vegetation, and long convertible trousers. Add insect repellent, sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, binoculars, and spare camera batteries. Pack energy snacks and a basic first-aid kit. Forest mornings in Rwanda can be surprisingly cold, so a fleece or lightweight sweater is essential — even in the wet months.

Let Us Plan Your Rwanda Adventure

The low season in Rwanda is not a lesser version of the experience. It is a quieter, more intimate, and often more affordable version of one of Africa’s greatest safari destinations. The gorillas are still there. The chimpanzees still call through the canopy. The golden monkeys still race through the bamboo. On the other hand, at Safari Vacations and Travel Services, we specialize in building seamless, memorable itineraries tailored to every traveler’s goals and budget. Reach out to our team today, and let us help you plan the Rwanda safari you have always imagined.
