Marking it as one of the very important landmarks as far as Uganda’s ancient history is concerned. The Ugandan government, in partnership with foreign partners, opened the Karuma Power Station, a 750-megawatt hydropower station located at Karuma Falls. They also constructed the Karuma Bridge to connect the Gulu district and the Masindi district.
It was also constructed to support the cotton farmers in the West Nile region of Uganda. Karuma Falls derived its name from a belief that the Great Spirit called Karuma placed these beautiful and nice-looking rocks to block the river waters of the Victoria Nile, which is why the falls are in Karuma.
The Karuma Falls used to be a danger zone for the Lord Resistance Army Rebels in 2007. When the rebels attacked every passing vehicle on the road, killing and abducting young boys and girls. However, they were defeated by the Uganda government and were forced out of Uganda. They moved and settled in the tropical rainforest in the Democratic Republic of Congo to date.
