Hidden Costs on an African Safaris

Hidden Costs on an African Safaris. On a safari, there are several costs that you incur. Your tour operator may not not explain everything in detail, except if you request so. These costs or expenses are however crucial for the smooth running of the safari. In this article, we’ll discuss the several costs that you incur on the tour.

Park Fees and Conservation Charges

What It Covers: Most safari destinations in Africa charge fees for entering national parks or game reserves. These fees support conservation efforts and wildlife protection.

Cost Range: $30–$150 per person per day, depending on the park and location.

Tip: Ensure your package includes park fees or ask for a breakdown of costs.

Transportation and Transfers

What It Covers: While many safari packages include game drives, additional costs may arise for:

Flights to remote camps.

Airport transfers.

4×4 vehicle hire for private safaris.

Cost Range: Domestic flights can cost $100–$400, while private vehicle hire might add $100–$300 per day. The price range depends on the type of vehicle you are hiring. The lower the cost of car hire, the less luxurious the vehicle is, and vice versa.

Tip: Opt for fly-in safaris or inquire about shared transfers to reduce costs.

Tipping and Gratuities

What It Covers: Guides, drivers, trackers, lodge staff, and cooks typically expect tips as part of their income.

Cost Range: $10–$25 per day per person for guides and $5–$10 per day for lodge staff.

Tip: Carry cash in the local currency or USD for tipping, and check with your operator for guidelines.

Premium Activities

What It Covers: Certain bucket-list experiences often come at an extra cost, including:

  • Primate trekking permits which range from $100 to $1500. Golden monkey permits cost $100 while chimpanzee permits cost $250 per person. Gorilla permits cost $400 in DR Congo, $800 in Uganda, and $1500 per person in Rwanda. You need to talk with your tour operator to see which destination and combination is better for your safari.
  • Hot air balloon safaris: $400–$600 per person.
  • Night game drives: $50–$150.
  • Cultural visits to Maasai or other tribal villages: $20–$50 per person.

Tip: Prioritize activities and include them in your budget beforehand.

Drinks and Specialty Meals

What It Covers: While some packages offer all-inclusive dining, others may charge for drinks (especially alcohol) and premium meals. Our safari costs are inclusive of drinking water while in the vehicle, plus soft drinks while having meals.

Cost Range: $5–$10 for soft drinks or local beers, with wines and spirits costing more.

Tip: Confirm what’s included and consider bringing your drinks, where allowed.

Travel Insurance

What It Covers: Insurance is a must for safaris, covering medical emergencies, cancellations, and lost luggage.

Cost Range: $100–$300 depending on coverage and trip length.

Tip: Purchase insurance that specifically includes safari activities, such as game drives, bushwalking, or hot-air ballooning.

Visa Fees and Vaccinations

What It Covers:

Visa requirements vary by country and nationality.

Some regions recommend vaccinations (e.g., yellow fever) or malaria prophylaxis.

Cost Range:

Visas: $50–$100 per person.

Vaccines: $50–$150.

Tip: Check entry requirements and consult a travel health clinic well in advance. Also, many tour operators do not offer/quote them.s

Laundry Services

What It Covers: Laundry is often an extra service in camps and lodges, especially in mid-range or budget accommodations.

Cost Range: $5–$10 per item or $30+ for a full load.

Tip: Pack lightweight, quick-dry clothing to minimize laundry needs.

Souvenirs and Gifts

What It Covers: Handcrafted souvenirs, such as Maasai jewelry, textiles, and wood carvings, are often irresistible purchases.

Cost Range: $10–$200+ depending on the item.

Tip: Support local artisans and bargain respectfully to get the best prices.

Connectivity and Communication

What It Covers: Internet access in remote lodges or camps may come with an additional fee. Satellite phone calls are also expensive.

Cost Range: $10–$50 per day for Wi-Fi, and up to $5 per minute for satellite phone calls.

Tip: Embrace the digital detox, or check if your accommodation offers free connectivity.

How to Minimize Hidden Costs

Ask Questions Upfront: Request a detailed breakdown of what’s included in your safari package.

Prepay Where Possible: Book optional activities, transfers, and park fees in advance to avoid surprises.

Plan for Extras: Set aside 10–20% of your total budget for unforeseen expenses.

Travel During the Low Season: Many lodges and camps offer discounts during off-peak months, helping offset additional costs.
